A 5-year-old girl was shot in the afternoon of January 15 near the 4100 block of Woodland Avenue in South Central.

Police say she was rushed to the hospital in “very serious condition.”

The shooting was reported at about 5:30 p.m. inside a home in the Historic South-Central neighborhood of South L.A. where several other children under 18 were playing.

Both LAFD and the Los Angeles Police Department said they responded at the same time and found the little girl suffering from a gunshot wound.

LAPD Lt. Raul Jovel said the child was in “very serious condition.”

“We don’t want to assume it was self-inflicted; we don’t want to assume that it was a crime either,” Jovel said.

“This really impacted our officers; seeing a child that’s suffered an injury like this so, we’re also looking for the welfare of our officers at this time,” Jovel said.

Officials have not said whether or not someone is in custody and the what lead to the shooting is still in the early stages of the investigation at this time.
